Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced apples (about 4 medium apples)
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in the sliced apples and chopped nuts (if using).
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  8. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Serve warm or at room temperature. Drizzle with caramel sauce if desired.

Notes

  • For best results, use firm, slightly tart apples like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji.
  • If you don’t have caramel sauce, you can dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar.
  • This recipe can also be made in muffin tins for individual servings; bake for 20-25 minutes.
