Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Gently fold in the sliced apples and chopped nuts (if using).
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve warm or at room temperature. Drizzle with caramel sauce if desired.
Notes
- For best results, use firm, slightly tart apples like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji.
- If you don’t have caramel sauce, you can dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar.
- This recipe can also be made in muffin tins for individual servings; bake for 20-25 minutes.
