Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- For the Filling:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in egg, melted butter, and salt. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours, or up to 24 hours).
- The next morning, punch down the dough. Roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
- Spread softened butter evenly over the dough.
- In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the buttered dough.
- Roll the dough tightly from the long side. Cut into 12 equal slices.
- Place slices in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 30-60 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While rolls are baking, prepare the frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Mix until combined. Add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
- Spread frosting over warm cinnamon rolls.
Notes
- Ensure your milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
- Dough can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
- Adjust flour amount as needed for dough consistency.
- For softer rolls, slightly underbake them.
- Frost the rolls while they are still warm for the frosting to melt slightly.
