Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • For the Filling:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in egg, melted butter, and salt. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours, or up to 24 hours).
  5. The next morning, punch down the dough. Roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
  6. Spread softened butter evenly over the dough.
  7. In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the buttered dough.
  8. Roll the dough tightly from the long side. Cut into 12 equal slices.
  9. Place slices in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 30-60 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. While rolls are baking, prepare the frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  13. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Mix until combined. Add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
  14. Spread frosting over warm cinnamon rolls.

Notes

  • Ensure your milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
  • Dough can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
  • Adjust flour amount as needed for dough consistency.
  • For softer rolls, slightly underbake them.
  • Frost the rolls while they are still warm for the frosting to melt slightly.
