  4. Remove from heat. Stir in peppermint extract and food coloring if using.
  5. Pour the mixture onto a greased baking sheet or into a candy mold.
  6. Let it cool completely.
  7. Break into pieces or cut into shapes.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
