  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup apple cider (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 12 tablespoons maple syrup or honey (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Combine chopped apples, water, apple cider (if using), and lemon juice in a large saucepan or slow cooker.
  2. Cook over medium heat on the stovetop, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender, about 15-20 minutes. If using a slow cooker, cook on low for 2-3 hours or high for 1-1.5 hours, until tender.
  3. Mash the apples with a potato masher or fork until you reach your desired consistency. For a smoother applesauce, use an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender.
  4. Stir in cinnamon and nutmeg.
  5. Taste and add maple syrup or honey if you prefer sweeter applesauce.
  6. Let cool before serving or storing.
