Ingredients

  • 6 pounds apples, cored and quartered
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine apples and apple cider in a large pot or slow cooker.
  2. Cook until apples are very tender, about 2-3 hours on high in a slow cooker or 1-2 hours on the stovetop, stirring occasionally.
  3. Mash the apples with a potato masher or immersion blender until smooth.
  4. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and salt.
  5. Cook uncovered over low heat or on low in the slow cooker, stirring frequently, until the apple butter is thick and dark, about 2-4 hours more.
  6. Ladle hot apple butter into sterilized jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace.
  7. Wipe rims and place lids on jars. Screw on bands fingertight.
  8. Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

  • For a sugar-free version, use a sugar substitute approved for canning.
